As your body labors to prepare for your baby, you’re sure to undergo some significant aches and pains. In many cases, expectant mothers may express back pain. Although it is relatively normal to experience back pain during pregnancy, it is a nuisance that no one wants to suffer through. Thankfully, there are a few tried-and-true methods that can help alleviate some of the pain.

As always, it is important to include regular exercise in your day-to-day routine. Staying active can help relieve some of the back pain by preventing your muscles from getting too tight. One of the best methods of exercise during pregnancy is swimming or treading water, since it is a great means of cardio and it puts little to no stress on your joints.

Another way to minimize back pain is by seeking chiropractic care or massage therapy. Many women carry tension in their glutes or lower back due to the pressure the fetus puts on their pelvis. This tension can usually be alleviated through a chiropractic/massage appointment. In scheduling an appointment, it is essential to check that your chiropractor or therapist has experience in caring for pregnant and postpartum women.

Many women find maternity belts to be a great resource for relieving back pain. This garment is intended to do the heavy-lifting for you by limiting the stress that the growing fetus causes to your muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Of course, you do not want to overuse the maternity belt because the muscles may become inactive and will have to be retrained after pregnancy. Most doctors recommend wearing these belts for the most taxing of activities, but be sure to consult with your FP- OB physician to decide what is best for you.
